A 4 year old girl is the latest and 22nd victim of deaths as a result of the cholera epidemic in Rivers state. This is Sequel to an earlier report by The Whistle on the cholera outbreak ravaging 14 communities in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State as the APC led government remains aloof and unable to change the situation of the victims or curb the outbreak in the area.
Touched by this situation which is relatively covered up by mainstream media, President Jonathan’s attention has since been brought to the issue and he has reportedly directed that immediate intervention and all forms of assistance be deployed to saving the victims and stopping the scourge in the state.
President Jonathan’s message was conveyed by the Rivers State representative on the Governing Board of NDDC, Chied Ephraim Etete-Owoh during the handover of drugs and supplies to the Basic Health Center in Andoni;
“President Goodluck Jonathan was concerned about the loss of lives in Andoni communities and has directed that we take care of the sick people urgently,” he said.
Thanking President Jonathan and the NDDC for the gesture, Mr. Collins Ikwut, Chairman Ebukuma Community Development appealed for more assistance in equipping health centers in the area which has been neglected by the Amaechi administration while calling for action to tackle the Water problem in the area.
According to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, 20 people died of the disease in Andoni within one month. He said that about 171 cases of the disease had been recorded so far in the state. The Whistle will continue to cover this story till things really ‘change’ for the people of Rivers.
