*Drums up more support for his transformation agenda
Following the successful conduct of the Osun State election, a Pro-Jonathan campaign organisation, Goodluck Initiative for Transformation (GIFT 2015), has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for committing to his promise and resolve to deliver free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, after the election results were announced by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Coordinator of the organisation, Chinedu Okpalanma, said the preparation and conduct of the election, that saw the incumbent Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, re-elected, “clearly shows the sincerity and commitment of President Jonathan towards moving Nigeria forward through sincere transformation initiatives.”
According to Okpalanma, “For the first time in decades we are witnessing very free and transparent elections in Nigeria. We saw what happened in Ekiti State months back, and now we saw the outcome in Osun State. These are states that in the past were associated with destruction and bloodshed during elections. Under President Jonathan, not a drop of blood was shed in these states and people came out and voted freely.
“Those who had plans to cause mayhem with their supporters were checkmated by the security operatives, and registered voters were not molested by anybody.
“President Jonathan promised Nigerians that the days of ballot boxes snatching were over, and we are seeing the manifestation of those promises. It is something worthy of commendation and support because no past government was able to achieve this feat.”
According to the organisation, “the President’s achievements in the Ekiti and Osun State elections are some of the reasons we have been clamouring for more support from Nigerians for this administration because it is obvious President Jonathan means well for Nigeria.”
Reacting to reports that the huge deployment of security personnel to Osun State prior to the election, was geared towards assisting the PDP candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and intimidating the opposition, Okpalanma said: “Before the election, the body language of the opposition simply showed they were out to create chaos through the huge movement of their supporters from outside the state into Osun. We saw what happened at their rally in Osogbo.
“But the President kept to his word by ensuring that only those who had business to vote in the state were allowed to vote. I saw Aregbesola on television saying he was satisfied with the conduct even before voting ended. We have to appreciate what President Jonathan is committed in achieving for Nigerians. We know what would have happened if these measures were not taken.”
